We looked at Zafiras before opting for the Galaxy. The Galaxy is bigger, but the Zafira has a more versatile seating system (they all fold into the floor, the Galaxy you have to remove them) But the Diesel engine in the Galaxy is better than the Vauxhall DTi. Zafiras also seem to hold thier value better, hence secondhand prices are kept high. Drive both, to be honest it just so happened that a Galaxy TDi came along at the right price/age/condition/mileage.

Zafira is much smaller than a Galaxy; the rearmost seats have very little legroom , and this depends on you sliding the middle row forwards a bit, compromising legroom for those seated there. They are really only suitable for small children. In the Galaxy, 7 adults are not a problem.

Our childminder has a Zaf and was absolutely amazed when she saw us once when loaded up our Alhambra. She now considers her car as just that, a car and not an MPV.

Just out of interest, does anyone know the maximum permitted mass and train weight of a Zaf?

We've got a Zafira at work - it make the ShaGalbra (or whatever you call it) seem reliable!) It's three years old - was off the road with a faulty sensor after 2 days, Aircon re-filled twice and still not working and it drives like a dog! New ones are much better though.

Oh aye, and the turbo Zaf has a habit of getting stolen as the engine will fit in almost any other Vauxhall and the ECU can be re-flashed wiping out the key transponder security.

 mate had one for 18 months and 16 months of that were at the local dealer with a broken cam shaft

it broke at 2 months old and 1200 miles

and then dealer gave him a loan car as the head parts were on back order

[yep 16 months ] makes fraud seam like gods

Bet it was a diesel and the lobes had spun on the camshaft....

Yes, spun! The cams are not single machined parts, but have the lobes fixed on afterwards.

Also the seating isn't that versatile. If you have a baby seat, you need to remove it to let people into the rear seats.

Drove a Zafira when the car was in the body shop (non-fault) and i reckon the Galaxy is the better car (more comfortable, roomier, better seats). Zafira is a lot cheaper, most probably in the maintenance....

I had a zafira before the galaxy.

Engine OK for size of car and did the 1000 mile each way to Biarritz with 4 adults, 3 kids, roofbox and bikes on the back just as well as the Galaxy and at 40mpg at 80mph too.

I had numerour engine management faults all related to the glow plugs / injector units and also the brake pedal switch. No other problems though.

More important, the air con never failed and the service is 20000 miles not 10,000.

I like the galaxy for size ane level of equiptment and the quality feel. I hate it for the unreliability of the VW parts (aircon, aux heater) that you would assume to be first class.

I loved the Zafira for the seating, hated it for the dull interior and lack of space on the rear bench seat.
